What Is Rehab Like? All You Need to Know

What is rehab like? What does rehab look like? Do you want to seek help with your addiction and wonder what happens in rehab? No doubts, you need to check yourself into a rehab facility when faced with chronic drug addiction. In this article, we will discuss what rehab looks like and what you can expect when you’re there.

What Is Rehab?

Rehab, in basic parlance, is a residential facility that provides treatment programs for alcohol and drug addiction. There are also outpatient rehabs that are equipped to provide the appropriate care to help individuals battling addiction, either after you leave an residential facility or in lieu of.

What Happens When You Enter Rehab?

Choosing to attend rehab is the first step to getting sober. And if you or a loved one is addicted to drugs or alcohol addiction, you are probably wondering what rehab is like. Particularly, you might want to know what to expect and how it works.

So what does rehab look like? You will go through a combination of psychological and medical care, isolation from alcohol and drug use.

As a preamble, you will meet a staff member that will inform you of the various treatment options available. Most importantly, during this time you will undergo an assessment that will help determine the best course of treatment for your addiction treatment plan. At Hillside Mission, all of our clients receive an individualized course of treatment. We understand that no two people or addictions are alike, so we treat them as such.

During your intake assessment you will also have the opportunity to let the facility know about any allergies you may have, dietary restrictions, or pre-existing health conditions.

Most treatment plans  encompass a combination of detox, individual and group therapy sessions, psychological reevaluation (which is usually done after detox), treatment, physical coaching (nutrition inclusive), and, most importantly, aftercare.

What Happens During Rehab?

In rehab, the therapeutic approaches employed are classified into two: individual and group therapy. While both are quite different approaches to fostering care, they are more likely to work when they are included in a patient’s treatment plan.

So let’s take a look at these forms of therapy individually.

  • Individual Therapy

Individual therapy is a one-on-one therapy session between the patient and the therapist. The therapist uses the information, thoughts, or feelings the client expresses to navigate their addiction.

Here the therapist and patient will mostly talk about cravings, withdrawal symptoms, recovery progress, and challenges to maintaining sobriety. The sessions touching those core aspects will help the therapist figure out the appropriate coping mechanisms.

Further, the therapist will also employ full-proof psychological approaches like motivational interviewing to help the patient transition to recovery safely. The therapist will work with the patient to map out goals. Following each milestone, the addict will be rewarded, so he or she can feel motivated to remain sober.

  • Group Therapy

Group therapy works a little differently from individual therapy. As the name implies, group participants will learn how to navigate through their addiction by association.

The group sessions will help the patient learn how to communicate and express their thoughts better. Most importantly, it will also help the patients get the right support they need to get through their addiction.

According to a study, the ability to gather is a powerful therapeutic tool, and this tool is what group therapy harnesses to foster recovery.

What Happens After Rehab?

This is probably one of the pivotal steps of addiction treatment. After rehab, if the client doesn’t continue with aftercare, they run the risk of potentially relapsing.

A good rehab facility should draw up an aftercare plan, which could involve integration in accountability or support groups to ensure the patients stay true to their commitment.
